On 1 November, Marcel Hug and Daniel Romanchuk raced closely through all five New York boroughs. Romanchuk opened a gap during the final section in Central Park, but Hug caught him in the closing metres and finished in 1:28:14, one second ahead of the American. It was the Swiss athlete’s eighth New York victory.

The contest for third place was also decided by one second, with David Weir recording 1:35:38 ahead of Lito Anker. The results showed how narrow the margins can remain in elite wheelchair racing even after more than 42 kilometres.

In the women’s race, Catherine Debrunner established an early lead and won in 1:40:02, only 30 seconds outside her own course record. It was her fifth Abbott World Marathon Majors victory of the year. Tatyana McFadden and Susannah Scaroni finished second and third respectively.
